A dead bedroom isn't the end, it's just gone quiet. Here's a 31-day sex challenge to reignite desire, with a day-by-day calendar, built with sex educator Alicia Sinclair. Most days cost nothing.

By Annette Benedetti, sex educator, intimacy coach, and host of the Talk Sex with Annette podcast

If you want to know how to fix a dead bedroom, here’s the good news: you don’t need a dramatic overhaul or a painful heart-to-heart to start. You need a plan, and one small, low-pressure invitation at a time. That’s exactly what this 31-day sex challenge gives you. Maybe your sex life has gone quiet, or turned into the same thing on repeat. Maybe you want to explore your fantasies but have no clue where to start, or your partner just shrugs and says they don’t know what they’re into (which happens to so many of us, especially women who were never given permission to figure it out). Or maybe you’re a brand-new couple who wants to start hot and honest instead of falling into a rut later. Wherever you land, this is for you.

I built this calendar with Alicia Sinclair, a certified sex educator with nearly 25 years in intimate wellness, founder and CEO of COTR (the company behind B-Vibe and Le Wand), 2026 XBIZ Sexpert of the Year, and 2026 AVN Outstanding Sexual Wellness Advocate. Below you’ll find the full 31-day calendar you can click through, plus everything you need to make it work. Almost every day costs nothing, your bodies, your words, and your curiosity are the main tools. A few days invite an optional toy if you want to add one, never required.

First, an Honest Word: Is a Sex Challenge Enough?

A 31-day challenge is the perfect fix for a bedroom that’s gone quiet, boring, or predictable, the “we still love each other, we’re just in a rut” situation. If that’s you, start below tonight. But if your dead bedroom comes with deep resentment, a partner who’s emotionally checked out, or a long-standing low-desire/high-desire conflict that’s become painful, a calendar is a wonderful start but may not be the whole answer. There’s no shame in that, sometimes the real fix is a few sessions with a sex therapist or couples intimacy coach alongside the fun. This challenge works best on a foundation of basic goodwill and a willingness, from both of you, to get curious again.

Why Does a Sexless Relationship Happen? (It’s Usually Not the Love)

Most couples go quiet in bed not because the love is gone, but because sex got boring and predictable. Desire runs on novelty. As Alicia puts it, sex is a lot like food: if you go to the same restaurant and order the same meal every time, it’s reliable, but you slowly lose the excitement. The anticipation of something new is what brings the spark back. In long-term relationships, desire ebbs and flows, and newness is often what reignites it. So the goal of this challenge isn’t to fix something broken, it’s to bring novelty, curiosity, and play back in, one day at a time.

Is a Dead Bedroom the Same as a Sexless Marriage?

Essentially, yes. “Sexless marriage” and “dead bedroom” describe the same thing: a relationship where sex has become rare or stopped altogether. Clinically, a sexless relationship is often defined as having sex fewer than about ten times a year, but the label matters less than how you both feel about it. If the quiet bothers one or both of you, this 31-day sex challenge is a low-pressure way to start turning it around, whether you’ve been together fifteen years or fifteen days.

The Biggest Mistake Couples Make (Don’t Do This)

The fastest way to make spicing things up backfire is going too hard, too fast, without a conversation first. Picture it: you’re having your usual vanilla sex, you flip into doggy, and suddenly someone’s spanking you out of nowhere. Startling, not sexy. Introducing pain, a toy, or a new act without talking about it first is how you turn your partner off and make them less willing to explore next time. That’s exactly why a calendar works so well: it gives you a reason to talk about each thing before you do it, so nobody gets surprised and everyone stays safe and turned on.

    Start Here: The Yes/No/Maybe List

The single best first step for any dead bedroom is a yes/no/maybe list, a list of all kinds of activities you might explore, where you each mark every item as a yes, a no, or a maybe, then compare and talk. Do it together, or fill it out solo first if that feels safer. It does three things at once: it gets you talking about sex, it often turns you on while you do it, and it maps exactly where each of you is comfortable, so you know where to start and what’s off the table. Grab mine and find out where you align and your best jumping-off point.

How to Build the Month: The Arc

The calendar moves the way any good adventure does, start easy, build as trust grows:

    • Week 1 (Days 1 to 7): Talk and reconnect. Conversation, curiosity, the yes/no/maybe list, planning your month, and getting back to basics with your bodies.
    • Week 2 (Days 8 to 15): Sensation. Blindfolds, feather touch, temperature, massage, and an optional first toy or two.
    • Week 3 (Days 16 to 23): Power and impact. Verbal power play, light restraint, spanking, dominant and submissive energy.
    • Week 4 (Days 24 to 31): Blend and build. Layer what you’ve learned, combine categories, create your own adventures.

You can start on any day of any month, this is not just for October.

    The 31-Day Sex Challenge Calendar

    lovehoney sex toy advent calendar

Want the toolbox done for you? A few days below invite an optional toy. If you’d rather not shop piece by piece, a Lovehoney sex toy advent calendar hands you 24 days of curated toys at up to 64% off, basically this challenge with the shopping already done. See my full breakdown of all three:Lovehoney Advent Calendar Review: Enjoy vs Couples vs Luxury (Which One’s Right for You?) (code ANNETTE15).

    Week 1: Talk and Reconnect

Day 1: Take the Pressure Off

No sex tonight, on purpose. Sit together and agree to do this challenge with zero pressure and zero judgment. Set one ground rule: when a prompt makes either of you flinch, you don’t have to say yes, you just practice getting curious about it. That agreement is the whole foundation. Free.

    Day 2: The Yes/No/Maybe List

Fill out a yes/no/maybe list together (or separately, then compare). Talk through your yeses and your maybes. Notice what surprises you about each other. Free. Kink Checklist: 107 Kinks and Limits to Rate With Your Partner

Day 3: Plan Your Month (and a Toy-Shopping Date)

Skim the whole calendar together, all 31 days, so you can see what’s coming and decide what you actually want to try. If a few optional-toy days appeal to you, make a toy-shopping date now (online, or at a good local shop) so you have what you want on hand before those days arrive. Zero pressure to buy anything, browsing together with no agenda is a turn-on of its own, and the best discoveries often come from a partner pointing you toward something you’d never have picked. Free to do; optional to buy. [[ optional: Lovehoney Advent Calendar (toolbox in a box) → review link — ANNETTE15 ]]

    Day 4: Non-Sexual Touch

Reconnect with touch that has no goal: a long hug, holding hands, a back rub with no expectation of anything more. For a bedroom that’s gone cold, this rebuilds safety first. Free.

Day 5: Back to Basics With Your Bodies

No toys. Explore each other’s bodies like it’s the first time, new positions, new areas, slow down and pay attention. Free.

Day 6: Switch Up Your Go-To

Whatever your autopilot move is, change one thing. If you always use fingers, try your tongue. Swap a BJ for a hand job, or vice versa. Small novelty, big spark. Free.

    Day 7: The Curiosity Conversation

Practice the fantasy conversation itself. One of you shares a small curiosity; the other practices receiving it with “tell me more” instead of a yes or no. Never lead with judgment, take time to sit with new ideas, and bring things up when you’re both relaxed. Keep the door open so your partner keeps bringing you ideas. Free.

    Week 2: Sensation

    Day 8: The Blindfold

Take away sight and feel how every other sensation sharpens. A scarf or tie works free; a soft blindfold makes it easy. Optional toy.

    Day 9: Feather-Light Touch

Blindfold on, trace the whole body with fingertips and breath, teasing everywhere but the obvious places. A feather tickler adds to it, but your hands are enough. Free; optional toy.

    Day 11: Sensual Massage

Give each other a full-body massage with oil, no goal but relaxation and touch. Hands only is perfect; a wand turns it up by working the whole body before the good parts. Free; optional toy.

Day 12: Add Your First Vibrator

Bring in a small, non-intimidating vibrator. Alicia’s rule: anywhere you’d use fingers or a tongue, add the vibe. It simply amplifies sensation and does some of the work, so you can relax and feel everything else. Optional toy (this is a toy-centered day).

    Le Wand Double Vibe

    Day 13: Nipple Play

Spend the whole session above the waist. Treat the nipples like a clit, circle, roll, tap. Hands and mouth are all you need; hands-free suckers let you use your hands elsewhere. Free; optional toy.

Day 14: A Toy for Him Is a Toy for Us

(anchor id: day-14) Flip the script on “male” toys. During a hand job or blow job, add a stroker or vibrating sleeve so your jaw gets a rest and you both stay connected. It takes the work out of sex and keeps it fun. Optional toy (toy-centered day). Week 3: Power and Impact

    Day 16: Verbal Power Play

No props. One of you takes the lead for 30 minutes and gets to direct: “Put your hands over your head and don’t move them.” Learn to use your voice to command. Set hard boundaries and a safe word (red/yellow/green) first. Free.

    Day 17: Swap the Power

Tonight the other partner leads. You might think you’re always the dominant one, try being the one who surrenders, and see what lights up. You don’t know if you don’t try. Free.

    Day 18: Dirty Talk

The most underrated tool there is, and it’s free. If it feels awkward, practice a line or two out loud when you’re alone first, then deploy it with intention. “You feel so good.” See what happens. Free.

    Day 19: Light Restraint

Add soft restraint to the power play. Hands held above the head, a scarf, a tie. Being gently held in place ramps up anticipation fast. Free with what’s around the house; optional cuffs make it easy.

    Day 20: First Spanks

Explore light impact, by hand first. Over the knee? Soft and steady, or a slow build? Talk about it, start gentle, check in. Find out what you actually like. Free.

    Day 21: Add an Implement

If hand spanking landed well, try a paddle or soft flogger. Different implements, different sensations. Keep it light to start. If you got the tickler above, it has the flogger on the opposite end you can explore with, or: Optional toy.

    Week 4: Blend and Build

    Day 24: Layer Two Things

Combine. Blindfold + feather touch. Restraint + a vibrator. Take two things you tried and stack them in one session. Free (uses what you’ve already got).

    Day 25: Sensation + Impact

Try a blindfold while being spanked, or a weighted plug in while exploring impact, so you feel sensation inside and outside the body at once. Free or uses earlier toys.

    B-Vibe Snug Plug

    Day 26: Power + Pleasure

Combine a power dynamic with a toy. The one in charge controls the vibrator, the pace, the whole experience. Control is its own turn-on. Uses a toy you already have.

    Day 27: Build a Scene

Plan a short “scene” ahead of time: pick two or three things from your toolbox and an order. Set the room, the lighting, maybe an outfit. Anticipation is half the pleasure. Free.

Day 28: Try One New Thing

Pick one yes or maybe from your list you haven’t done yet, and go for it. By now you’ve built the trust and communication to try something that felt like a stretch on Day 1. Free.

Day 29: Bring Back Your Favorite

Return to the thing from this month that worked best, and go deeper on it. Novelty matters, but so does mastering what you both love. Free.

    Day 30: Full Toolbox Night

Build your most layered experience yet from everything you’ve learned, set the scene, move through sensation, power, and pleasure. Your choose-your-own-adventure. Free.

Day 31: The Debrief (and What’s Next)

Talk about the whole month. What surprised you? What’s a new yes? What do you want to keep? Set one intention for carrying this forward, because the goal was never 31 days, it’s a sex life that stays curious. Free.

Your Three Takeaways to Start Tonight

    1. Do a yes/no/maybe list. It gets you talking, turns you on, and maps where to begin. [[ link to checklist ]]
    2. Practice dirty talk. The most underrated, no-cost tool there is. Rehearse a line alone, then use it with intention.
    3. Skim the calendar and plan. See what you want to try, and set a toy-shopping date only if a few optional-toy days appeal to you.

    Frequently Asked Questions

How do you fix a dead bedroom?

Start with an honest, no-blame conversation, then bring novelty back in small, low-pressure steps. A structured plan like a 31-day sex challenge works because it gives you a reason to talk about each new thing before you try it, so nobody feels surprised or pressured. For a bedroom that’s gone quiet or boring, that’s often all it takes; for one with deep resentment or a checked-out partner, pair it with a sex therapist.

What is a sex challenge for couples?

A sex challenge is a day-by-day plan of small prompts and activities that help a couple rebuild intimacy and try new things without pressure. This 31-day version moves from conversation and reconnection into sensation, power play, and blending it all together, and most days cost nothing.

Why has our sex life gone quiet even though we love each other?

Usually it’s not about love, it’s about novelty. Desire fades when sex becomes the same thing on repeat, and real life (stress, kids, resentment, exhaustion) hits the brakes. Reintroducing newness and curiosity is what reignites it.

How do we explore fantasies without judging each other?

Never lead with judgment, get curious instead. Use “tell me more,” take time to sit with new ideas rather than reacting, and bring things up when you’re both relaxed, not stressed. The goal is to stay a safe person to bring ideas to.

What’s the best first sex toy for a couple?

A small vibrator. Vibration feels good on all bodies, it’s non-intimidating, and it simply amplifies sensation. Think of anywhere you’d use fingers or a tongue and add the toy there.

How do you fix a sexless marriage?

The same way you reignite any dead bedroom: start with an honest, no-blame conversation, rebuild connection and novelty in small steps, and make trying new things feel safe and fun rather than pressured. A structured plan like this 31-day challenge gives you a path. If there’s deep resentment or a checked-out partner underneath it, add a sex therapist.

What’s a good way to spice up your sex life?

Bring in novelty one small step at a time: a new sensation, a toy, a power dynamic, a fantasy conversation. The mistake is going too big too fast. A day-by-day challenge works because each new thing gets talked about before it’s tried, so it stays exciting instead of overwhelming.

Can you start the challenge any time, or only in October?

Any time. It’s designed around Kinktober as a fun excuse, but the 31 days work in any month, and you can start on any date.
